DAY SEVEN - FINALIZING
Chapter 32 of How to Write a Children's Book: a 7-day Workshop in a Book
This is it.
These are the final steps to writing your children’s book. The finalization stage comes to you in three parts: a read-aloud session to make corrections, a clean read-through, and a celebratory saving of the file and victory dance.
Read your story aloud as if you were reading it to a child.
If you find any misspellings, missing words, or clunky sentences that you missed during the Drafting stage, fix them.
Then, read your work aloud again. The second time should be almost if not a completely clean read.
Session One
Ready your completed book map
Read the story as if reading it to a child for entertainment
Tip: Do not move on to the next session until you have had an almost if not completely clean read free of errors. Typically, this takes only two reads.
Step Away
Close your eyes for a moment, walk around, or read something else for at least a minute. Come back to your draft and read it.
This read should be clean and polished.
Session Two
Ready your completed book map
Read the story as if reading it to a child for entertainment
No tips here. You’re a children’s book writer now.
WELL, LOOK AT YOU
You’ve done it! You’ve written a children’s book!
You said you would do a thing when you picked up this book, and now, you are standing victoriously at the end with a finished children’s story ready for illustrations in your possession.
You should be so proud of yourself. Take a moment and let it sink in.
Victory dances and celebratory cookies are encouraged.
