DAY TWO - Last Mining Session
Chapters 15,16, 17 of How to Write a Children's Book: a 7-day Workshop in a Book
CLEAR YOUR SPACE OF DISTRACTIONS
You have one mining session to go, and it is a big one.
Just one more step to go. That step is to take your three most viable story candidates and choose one. This is our “one ring to rule them all” moment.
On another page, copy and paste your top three concepts from the previous session. It’s nice to put them in their own space, so you aren’t distracted by the other thoughts.
CHOOSE THE ITEM THAT WRITES ITSELF
It’s important to note that we may not find a clear beginning, middle, and end for each item on the list, but we must see at minimum the path to a story.
Remember - you can also write every single story on your list, but you can only write one thing at a time.
Again, you will need to set your timer for ten minutes for this session.
This is exactly how my document in Pages looked when I moved my three concepts to a clean page.
After my timer was up, I had this:
While I genuinely wanted to write number three, I knew it wasn’t the most straightforward idea to pursue. The camping idea, item number one, was much clearer. There was a natural path that moved from the beginning to the end.
Of the three ideas, number one was going to be the least problematic, so I chose it.
DAY TWO - SESSION THREE
It’s time for you to choose one item on your list.
Ready your writing implements
Set a timer for 10 minutes
Evaluate each of the three potential story ideas and assess if they have a clear story path (beginning, middle, and end)
Select one to work on for the remainder of this project.
TIP: If you finish before the time is up, do not linger. Do not second guess. Just be done.
Good on you. Get a coffee and/or a cupcake, and get some fresh air.
