Kayaking is my favorite outdoor activity. I’ve written and deleted four or five different explanations of my love of the sport, because they don’t accurately describe how kayaking makes me feel.
Being on flat water at 6 a.m., watching fog hover above the surface, and hearing the plop of a fish having breakfast somewhere in the distance is my idea of a good time.
Someday, I want to kayak the Mississippi River from source to sea. This isn’t a new desire. I’ve had it for a long time. When I first had the thought a few years ago, I found this:
This is my second time reading about Ellen Kolbo McDonah’s self-supported solo paddle from source to sea along the Mississippi River. I’m only on page 90, and there have been two encounters with leeches and two with snakes.
I do not remember there being this many leeches.
