Welcome to the Sunday Dispatch. Twice a month, I send out a quick newsletter linking to posts I’ve written throughout the week on HelloThisIsBarbara.com and other parts of the internet. I often include updates on what I’m working on, experiences I’ve had, and more.
If you’re not familiar with me: Hello. I’m B.A. Burgess, author of some children’s books, creator of a children’s book course, and a curious, complex person. For more information, consider reading the about page.
I got out of town for the first time all year over the Fourth of July weekend. I didn't go very far. Chattanooga isn't very far from Nashville, but it's a solid day trip. The photo above is from my solo kayaking trip on the fourth.
I'm drafting a post about my 8-mile kayaking trip, which I'll share with you all soon.
What I’m Reading
I tend to read multiple books at the same time. I'd like to be able to dip in and out of different texts depending on my mood or activity.
Currently, I'm reading Jupiter's Travels by Ted Simon, a book about his four-year trip around the world on his Triumph motorcycle. This book was written in the 70s. So far, it has only increased my desire to purchase a motorcycle.
I'm also reading book 3.5 in The Expeditionary Force series, which is the series about the 6-foot hamster aliens that I've mentioned a few times in previous posts. These books are candy! There are lizard aliens, hamster aliens, little green men aliens, and an AI that is housed in essentially a soda can. Why would anyone not read this series?
Thank You to Ashley Black
Ashley, if you’re reading this, thank you for taking the workshop on Skillshare and for taking the time to leave a review.
People often procrastinate when it comes to their creative projects because they care about them. We forget that if we hold too tightly to our projects and dreams, they will never have a chance to be.
Thank you for including me in your writing journey.
Until next time, Be Excellent to Each Other.

On Putting Books Down - Permission Slip
Below, I’m commenting on a book I returned due to my sensitivity to the subject matter discussed in the first few pages of the material. I think trigger warnings are mostly stupid, but just because I think that way doesn’t mean I’m right. Please take this as permission to skip this post if you, like me, have a very hard time reading about the insinuati…
Things I Wrote While Trying to Write about the Protest
I’ve been trying all morning to articulate my thoughts and feelings around protesting, the news, and everything else. Nothing is coming out right. So, here are some bullet points from my drafts that I want to share, because I think they don’t need a bunch of fluff around them to be understood:
